TMJ Disorder Treatment Offered in Buffalo, NY

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) usually involve temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles and other relevant structures around the joint that include ligaments, joint disc and capsule.
The jaw disorders often present with:

  • craniofacial pain
  • limited mouth opening
  • sounds such as clicking or crepitus
  • irregular or deviating jaw function

The condition is often complicated by symptoms of chronic head and neck pain.

TMDJ disorders are slow to develop, but often manifest themselves abruptly after an irritating event, such as a dental procedure, a bite on a hard food, or an accident.

The root cause of a TMDJ pain syndrome is often a gradual loss of ligamentous and tendon strength due to overuse from conditions such as chronic postural neck and shoulder disorders and teeth grinding. As the key tendons and ligaments become weak, the joint becomes hypermobile. This causes further disruption of the TMJ disc and retro discal tissue break down. If allowed to continue long enough, further wear tear leads to bony degeneration of the joint as well.

Experience

At OWM Integrative Wellness, Dr. Kaplan takes a comprehensive approach to the restoration of the TMJ stability.

In cases of ligament and tendon weakness, a prolotherapy technique is used to inject dextrose under ultrasound guidance into the TMJ capsule, tendon attachments, and key ligaments.

In cases of more extensive degeneration with involvement of the disc and joint surface, platelet rich plasma (PRP) is injected under ultrasound guidance to generate a stronger healing response.

Treatment

Prolozone  - A mixture of ozone and natural anti-inflammatory solutions are injected into the joint for pain and inflammation control.

Dextrose and biocellular prolotherapy – Concentrated dextrose solution is the first line of our regenerative treatments. When injected into tendons and joints, it promotes ligament regeneration and mild cartilage repair.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) through an ultrasound-guided injection is a stronger cellular treatment. It promotes joint cartilage regeneration and repair of torn tissue. PRP Prolotherapy technique is used in more advanced arthritic and degenerative cases. It directly delivers growth factors in the damaged tissue and activates a signaling mechanism that stimulates the body’s stem cell production and recruitment to the site of injury. Repair and new tissue growth occur quickly and naturally.

Self-renewal cellular therapy is the most advanced regenerative technique available. Stem cells are extracted from either the bone marrow or fat and are immediately reinjected into the injured areas. Direct delivery of mesenchymal stem cells into the affected area allows for repair by the growth of new healthy tissue. In cases of systemic inflammatory conditions and weakened immune system, lab–derived placenta products such as Placenta matrix and placenta derived Exosomes are used.

IOT (intraosseous therapy) bone marrow decompression. This cutting-edge technique was invented in Russia. It uses a simple needle insertion to stimulate bone marrow circulation and reduction of congestion. This process improves cartilage health from the inside.

Interstitial low level laser therapy. New cutting technology allows for placement of healing and anti-inflammatory laser lights directly into the injured tendons, ligaments and joint. This treatment is also used to activate PRP growth factors, making a PRP therapy more efficacious.

Peptide therapy. Dr. Kaplan’s in-depth knowledge of peptide therapy allows him to stimulate repair and regeneration with specifically selected peptides. Tissue-repairing peptides BPC and Thymosin beta 4 are used in the injection solutions and CJC/ Ipamorellin is often used to stimulate stem cell activity before the procedure. These peptides stimulate and enhance Dextrose prolotherapy, PRP, and Stem cells’ regenerative potential.

Benefits
  • Temporomandibular joint pain with chewing and biting.
  • Jaw clicking and catching.
  • Temporal pain and headaches

What to know before you go

Temporomandibular disorders are common are most commonly a result of chronic wear and tear and overuse that results in disruption of the joint’s stability and alignment.

Prolotherapy and PRP techniques quickly restore TMJ stability, function and reduce pain.

Safety

TMJ is always injected under ultrasound guidance.

Solutions utilized are natural substances that include dextrose and person’s own platelets.

As a result, this procedure is very well tolerated with a relatively short recovery window.
